In the recent years, the creative industries in Shanghai have made outstanding achievements under the leadership of the municipal government. The value added generated by the creative industries has increased from 49.3 billion yuan in 2004 to 114.8billion yuan in 2009, and the percentage in the overall GDP of the city has increased from 5.8% to above 7.7%. In 2009, the creative industries in Shanghai produced a total output of 390 billion yuan, with the value-added increasing 17.6% to 2008, and 950,000 employees. Among the creative industries, the R&D and design has shown 23.6% increase in the value-added, and the architectural design has shown 18.9% increase in the value-added. At present, there are 80 creative industry clustering parks, covering a total construction area of 2.68 million square meters, with over 6,000 enterprises and more than 110,000 employees from over 30 countries and regions around the world. They have attracted the accumulative total capital of over 100 billion yuan in the development of creative industries.
From design of large aircraft head to Zhenhua Port Machinery container cranes all over the port cities in the world, to 130,000 of Roewe own-brand cars that have been produced, from the TD-SCDMA3G international standards independent innovation, to innovation of Spreadtrum4G chip, to the “bridge master” Lin Yuanpei who has created a number of firsts in the world bridge-building history, to Shanghai “Laofengxiang” famous teacher design center under the leadership of China’s National Masters of Arts and crafts Zhang Xinyi, Zhang Jingyang and others, innovation and creativity has become an increasingly important driving force source for the development of Shanghai.
