Shanghai Design Cluster around Tongji University is located in Yangpu District. It is a design industry base with the center in Siping campus of Tongji University, covering an area of 2.6 square kilometers. Focused on the key element of creative design, the Design Cluster around Tongji University is building an industry chain on R&D, architectural design, cultural media, consulting and planning. There are many important projects in this cluster, including Shanghai No.1 International Design Square, Tongji United Square, SJTU Only Creative Design Park, and Design Originality Workshop, as well as a number of key institutions like Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tongji University, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute, and Shanghai Posts and Telecommunications Design Institute. By the end of 2009, the cluster has a total construction area of 650,000 square meters, with nearly 30,000 employees and a total output of 12.34 billion yuan, increasing by 20% to the previous year.
